Ullas story on defence industry | ||
| This is the history of The Swedish Defence Industry[i]. It is here we need to make real change, if we want welfare program instead that can bring hope to all the people to live unafraid without violence on our common planet. In Sweden, as well as all over the world, military and thus also the industries have been changing the defence systems like never before the recent years. Since 1993, USA has developed and built huge new military systems. Europe is following and has changed a lot on the air forces. Swedish Industries are on the wagon too. Alvis bought Hägglunds Vehicle in 1997. BAE Systems bought Alvis plc. Hägglunds – in 2004 changed to be Land Systems Hägglunds. British Aerospace (part of BAE system) bought 35% of Saab in 1998 (now 20%) United Defence, an American company, bought Bofors Defence. United Defence was part of the Carlyle Group. Kockums was sold to German Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) GmbH.
HDW and Thyssen Krupp Werften were fusion in 2005 and build Thyssen Krupp Marine System AG (Swedish Kockums is a part of this company).
In June 2005 BAE System Inc. (USA) bought United Defence and was this was to become the owners of Bofors Defence - now with the name BAE Systems Bofors and subsidiary company BAE Systems C-ITS.
January 2006, Hägglunds changed to BAE Systems Hägglunds.
Through the Holding company BAE System AB the companies Bofors and Hägglunds are now part of BAE Systems Inc. in USA.
Links to quite a lot of bigger actors in the defence industry.
Saab and Celcius joined. Saabs then dominating defence industry – aeroplane, robot and aeroplane electronic production now all joined within Saab. Artillery work and intelligent ammunitions has gone to BAE Systems Bofors.
Developments for the navy as well ships as submarines are concentrated within the Kockums.
Ericsson Ammunitions production is in Swedish/Finnish/French owned EURENCO and to Nammo with a broad Nordic ownership (?). Ericsson Microwave System makes the new network centric systems.
BAE Systems Hägglunds have sold the CV90 to Schwitzerland and Holland. Volvo makes motors to aeroplanes.
The picture is like in Denmark being complete with the participation of a wide number of smaller and bigger companies who produces a relatively small part for the defence industry. The Government does not see it as a problem that the defence industry is on foreign hand, but think it is required. This will keep the jobs in Sweden (but what kind of job) thanks to cooperation and investments. This also helps to reach a broader market. Sweden is dependent on some component for own defence systems, but also the export is a very important issue. Sweden takes part in a European program to ensure interoperability of the different defence systems.
The rising export strengthens the position of the Swedish industry in an international network of defence industries.
